The study takes place in the context of a project conducted by the JRC under an Administrative Agreement with DG RTD, which focuses on an Integrated Bioeconomy Land Use Assessment. This project is set within a broader framework to better understand EU bioeconomy-related policies, and their interaction with land systems and how land in Europe is used. As the European Commission seeks to develop more coherent and future-proof bioeconomy policies, it becomes essential to evaluate how different land-use pathways perform under various policy, technology, social and ecological assumptions, and how they affect environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
Within this context, the overall objective is to support the Joint Research Centre in advancing an integrated assessment of bioeconomy land-use options, building on the ongoing Integrated Bioeconomy Land Use Assessment and recent JRC work on bioeconomy narratives. Specifically, we will design and deliver a workshop with European Commission policy officers to test and refine a deliberation tool and a post-normal science approach. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with JRC experts and will draw on the project’s existing outcomes, including semi-structured interviews and a co-creation workshop that produced narratives and “what-if” policy storylines.
