In its Digital Single Market strategy, the European Commission reflected on the concerns of some member states and some players about the growing market power of online platforms. A public consultation is now underway to better understand the social and economic role of platforms, market trends, the dynamics of platform development and the various business models underpinning platforms. This seminar aims to support the quest for a better understanding of online platforms and the regulatory environment by exploring two key questions:
- What is a platform?
- Is specific regulation necessary?
The seminar, in cooperation with CCIA Europe, comprised keynote speeches and panel discussions to shed light on the definition of platforms, the dynamics of online markets, whether online platforms present real problems, and whether they need to be specifically regulated or whether existing completion rules are adequate.
