The rise of the far-right in the EU: what, why and how?

0

Far-right parties are making headway throughout the European Union, and the recent success of the AfD has proved Germany is no exception to the trend. But how can their electoral successes be explained? What are far-right parties actually – and what distinguishes them from the traditional right?

In the last European Parliament elections, far-right parties yet again gained ground, particularly in France. There, the National Rally (RN) won twice as many votes as Macron’s party. While the RN did not win the snap elections that followed, it seems that the difficulties in putting together a new government played into its hands.

On the EU level, far-right parties won’t be able to completely dominate policymaking in the upcoming term, partly because they themselves remain divided. Yet, they made significant gains and formed new EP groups: Patriots for Europe, and Europe of Sovereign Nations. What do we know about these groups and what can we expect from them? How might they affect the internal EP-dynamics in the next term?

Join our panel of experts online on 19 September to hear their thoughts on all of these pertinent questions and more, as we figure out the “what, why and how” of the rise of the far-right in the EU.
