In person only event
The European Union and its member states have long been key supporters of multilateralism and a system of global governance that is rules-based, effective, legitimate and democratic. Yet global governance and key multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, are increasingly in trouble. They are challenged by emerging powers, such as China and other BRICS countries, which have different views on global order. The Russian war against Ukraine has caused gridlock across global governance. And the war between Israel and Hamas puts the fragility of international rules and order on display.
This interactive roundtable focuses on the future of global governance. It pays attention to the views of the major powers outside Europe (the United States, China and the other BRICS countries). What are the prospects for global governance transformation to tackle key current problems, such as climate change, pandemics, migration, inequalities, and cyber and artificial intelligence? Where does Europe still see eye-to-eye with the other major powers? Where can it do business and where will it need to compromise? To what extent is there still scope for universal multilateral cooperation, for instance in the UN, or should we instead focus on informal institutions, such as the G7/G20?
A networking cocktail will be provided after the event
