Industrie 4.0 for Europe? Investment, Regulation and the Digital Single Market

0

With innovation and investment taking centre stage in the new European Commission policy, this seminar will explore short-term and long-term issues for Europe’s telecommunications and digital industries. The seminar will comprise two sessions focusing on these two aspects.

Session 1: The Digital Single Market and Industry Requirements for Network and Advanced Telecoms Services

Looking to the future, the key issue is how can Europe develop a proactive industrial and R&D policy framework that will enable rapid deployment of an Industrie 4.0 approach. In consequence, what are industry’s key requirements in terms of networks and services in view of Industrie 4.0, the Internet of Things, intelligent transportation, and so on?

Session 2: Implications for the Telecoms Single Market

Given this longer-term outlook, how should future industry requirements shape the structure and regulation of the telecoms industry? In the short term, issues revolve around the telecoms regulatory framework, the structure and possible consolidation in the telecoms sector, broadband deployment, spectrum allocation, and so on. A key issue is how can Europe’s telcos break free from the low-tariff, low-usage, low-investment vicious circle, and re-engage the innovation and investment path to provide the necessary EU-wide seamless services.
