Launch of the 2018 MEDAM Assessment Report on Asylum and Migration Policies in Europe.
EU policy-makers continue to face multiple challenges in the areas of asylum and immigration. These include reorganising the EU asylum system, improving cooperation with African countries in managing migration, supporting developing countries that host large numbers of refugees and ensuring successful integration of immigrants residing in the EU while preserving social cohesion. These challenges are inter-connected and require a comprehensive approach with the support by all EU member states. At the same time, however, member states are affected by immigration in substantially different ways, and the political preferences of policy-makers and voters also vary widely. These differences require thoughtful and practical proposals to overcome the impasse in the EU’s asylum and immigration policies.
The 2018 MEDAM Assessment Report on Asylum and Migration Policies in Europe builds on in-depth economic analysis of how policy interventions may be further developed to protect refugees, respect the human rights of migrants, reduce irregular immigration to the EU, and foster economic and social integration of immigrants residing in the EU. This report proposes a comprehensive strategy for EU asylum and immigration policies that is both politically feasible and effective, based on the concept of flexible solidarity between EU member states.
