The role of credit rating agencies in financial markets has come under scrutiny since the crisis. Over-reliance on external ratings by institutional investors emerges as a source of systemic risk that is difficult to mitigate, save by increasing disclosure to facilitate due diligence. In addition, current business models seem to generate conflicts of interest that are exacerbated by the structure of competition in the marketplace. At the same time, rating agencies have come under fire in the context of the Eurozone crisis, with legal challenges being launched in several member states.

At this joint ECMI-CEPS event, Karel Lannoo, Senior Research Fellow, will discuss with Frédéric Drevon, EMEA Head of Moody’s the future of ratings and the ways this industry could better serve investors, given the forthcoming legislative proposal of the European Commission.
