CEPS’40th anniversary/EU enlargement: looking ahead for Europe while learning from past experiences

In-person event

The prospect of a further (south)eastern enlargement of the European Union has once more triggered existential debates about its geopolitical posture, economic model and smooth functioning.

Organised on the eve of the European Commission’ publication of the enlargement strategy that should set the stage for a highly anticipated European Council summit in December, the event will entertain questions about the EU’s and candidate countries’ readiness for enlargement. This hopeful time is a good moment to try and offer clarity about the way forward, also by reflecting on past experiences.

Join this high-level panel discussion that will shed light on the multi-facetted aspects of widening and deepening the EU.

For decades, CEPS has worked on both dimensions and we pride ourselves with new and ambitious plans in both respects. Its researchers’ revised template on ‘Staged Accession’ to the EU has animated policy debates across Europe, and a high-level group convened by CEPS will shortly present its recommendations for institutional reform, building on our expert contribution to the Franco-German report.

This event is part of the “40th anniversary of CEPS” series, more information on the dedicated website
