Upgrading the EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement

0

Mexico is a rapidly developing economy, having successfully implemented many deep reforms and opened up its economy via its memberships of the WTO, NAFTA, APEC and the FTA with the EU. Mexico is also one of the 12 countries negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in the Asia-Pacific region. For these reasons alone, the current FTA with the EU is becoming outdated and needs to be reviewed, deepened and widened in scope. With TTIP negotiations in progress for two years now, Mexico should not be left out as it is bound to be affected. An upgrade of the EU-Mexico FTA is likely to benefit both partners and also represents a clear manifestation of the eventual openness of TTIP.

The BBVA-CEPS conference will explore the opportunities and issues of such a deeper and wider FTA with speakers at the highest level from both sides. Also, the results of a study on the potential benefits of an upgrade to the agreement and various options will be presented.
