The EU’s effectiveness in the Indo-Pacific relies on accurate contemporary knowledge of the states in the region. To address this need for knowledge, the National Centre for Research on Europe at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, has set up the EU in the Indo-Pacific (EUIP) network. EUIP encompasses 28 EU and Indo-Pacific partners who have worked together to assess the most effective role for the EU in the Indo-Pacific. On Monday 29 September 2025, a number of academic experts from the network will report on their research findings.
EUIP’s unique group of EU and Indo-Pacific expertise involves a mixture of academics, think-tankers and foreign policy officials from both the EU and third countries. The experts have conducted interviews; engaged in Delphi style policy debates; and run ‘policy sandpits’ in eight Indo-Pacific locations: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
The network has provided high-level foreign policy analysis, forecasting and outputs that will be of significant use for EEAS practitioners, the European Commission (particularly DG Trade and DG DEFIS), and the analyst and think tank community involved in foreign policy consultation in Brussels and Europe.
This project has received funding from the European Union under grant agreement number 101085570.
