Economic security has become a defining pillar of national strategy across advanced democracies. The current period is marked by the growing use of economic leverage as an instrument of statecraft, prompting governments to safeguard critical sectors and supply chains while maintaining their commitment to open markets. In the wake of recent elections, Japan has elevated economic security to the forefront of its policy agenda, drawing on its experience in managing economic pressure in the Indo-Pacific region.

As the European Union works to reinforce its own economic security framework, Japan offers both a valuable policy experience and a strategic partnership perspective in addressing shared vulnerabilities. This roundtable will explore avenues for enhanced EU–Japan alignment in this domain, with an overview of practical workstreams ranging from supply chain resilience to critical raw materials . The discussion will feature insights from Dr Takahiro Tsuchiya, Professor at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, whose expertise in economic security and emerging technology governance will shed light on Japan’s priorities and strategic outlook.

The event is expected to open with introductory remarks by His Excellency Mr Aikawa, Ambassador of Japan to the European Union.
