In search of a business case: next steps to ramp up hydrogen production

High-level workshop on the future of hydrogen

UPON INVITATION

The EU’s hydrogen economy is developing rapidly, spurred by the determination to decarbonise industries, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and, more generally, increase resilience. With the adoption of the hydrogen and decarbonised gas package, as well as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), a regulatory framework is starting to emerge. EU Hydrogen Bank and Member State auctions have given a first indication of prices. All this has led to a gradual emergence of the hydrogen economy. The next step will be to establish clear and effective regulation, definitions, and certification schemes for building the market and unlocking investments. Such measures are currently lined up in Germany (particularly the East), the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Spain, among others.
