In-person event
As geopolitical tensions persist and security challenges intensify, the EU is stepping up its defence ambitions. A particular focus is the ongoing military support to Ukraine, which is an integral component of the EU’s defence strategy.
Despite headline commitments of over EUR 250 billion by the US, the EU and its Member States since February 2022, the reality on the ground tells a more nuanced story. New research from Berkeley and Bocconi University reveals that only a portion of these commitments have translated into delivered support. Moreover, the real economic value of much of the military aid is significantly lower than declared, as many contributions involve outdated equipment. Interestingly, the study finds that the economic value of military equipment delivered by Europe exceeds that delivered by the US – due in part to Europe’s smaller, newer stockpiles and more constrained resources.
This event will examine the evolving landscape of overall EU military expenditure in light of battlefield experience in Ukraine: what is needed and when will it be available?
