As a key pillar of the European Health Union, the ‘European Health Data Space’ (EHDS) seeks to create positive momentum on several healthcare interoperability and patient empowerment concerns that have seen scant practical progress for years at the European Union level. It seeks specifically to provide rules, common standards and practices, as well as infrastructures and a governance framework, for both the primary and secondary use of public health data.
Among other provisions, it strengthens patients’ control over their data; it promotes the reliability, security and interoperability of electronic health records; and it establishes rules and ad hoc infrastructure for both the primary and secondary use of health data. Getting the governance and regulatory framework right is essential when it comes to health data. The latter account for roughly 30 % of the world’s data, with a market value expected to reach almost EUR 100 billion by the end of the decade.
This Roundtable, organised by EY in cooperation with CEPS, will discuss how the EHDS can strike an adequate balance between providing a framework for seamless interoperability between data but still respecting the highest security, privacy, and governance standards. Speakers will also discuss future scenarios, including innovative models and risks that may emerge from technological innovation.
