According to the National Intelligence Council, we are living a paradox: “The achievements of the industrial and information ages are shaping a world that is both more dangerous and richer with opportunity than ever before. Whether promise or peril prevails will turn on the choices of the humankind.” The hyper-connected society in which we live has created countless benefits but also great cyber(in)security. It is essential that we equip ourselves to effectively manage the current and future threats and to allow this promise to materialise. How will the package of cybersecurity measures proposed by the European Commission in September change the EU’s existing landscape? Will it be sufficient to make the EU more resilient and keep its citizens and their personal data safe? Will the EU be able to play a stronger role in the international arena in the fight against cybercrime and state-sponsored cyber-attacks?
