In person event

CEPS’ is once again marking 40 years of thinking ahead for Europe by organising a in-person, public event on the past, present and future of transatlantic security and defence cooperation in Europe and beyond.

The event is divided into two sessions “Taking stock of EU-NATO relations” (9:30-10:45 CET) and “European security and defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific” (11:15-12:30 CET).

It is necessary to take stock of more than 20 years of cooperation between Brussels’ two foremost international organisations: the EU and NATO. How has cooperation fared thus far? And with war in Ukraine still raging nearly two years on, how may cooperation be further strengthened to address current and future challenges to European security? Which factors could potentially undermine cooperation or change the European security landscape in the medium- to long-term?

Following this introductory session and a coffee break, we will turn our attention to the Indo-Pacific region – the future epicentre of international politics – by asking how Europe (including the EU and NATO) should best engage its resources to uphold its values and interests in a region faced by challenges linked to Taiwan’s territorial integrity (a potential large-scale conflict), the South China Sea (where marine border delimitation disputes reign supreme), and the Korean Peninsula (a 70-year-old frozen conflict on the nuclear brink), among others.

This event will be followed by a closed-door informal lunch discussion for CEPS members and select panellists as well as a walking lunch for other participants.

For CEPS members taking part in the closed-door discussion, please register your interest by sending an email to [email protected]
