This event marks the launch of ‘Capitalism, sustainability and democracy: future-proofing the European model, a new book published by the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Drawing on contributions from thirty senior European researchers, the book examines whether the EU can chart a third way between the mercantilist high-tech capitalism of the United States and the state-driven model of China. The publication builds on and extends the current academic debates, offering a conceptual framework and concrete proposals on industrial transformation, innovation policy, territorial cohesion and EU governance reform.
The launch will open with remarks by JRC Director-General Bernard Magenhann and CEPS Director Andrea Renda, followed by an address by the Member of the European Parliament, Lina Gálvez. Editors Luc Soete (University of Maastricht) and Sylvia Schwaag Serger (Lund University) will present the book’s main findings. Two panel discussions will bring together co-authors and high-level discussants, including Roman Arjona, Chief Economist at DG GROW, and Manuel Heitor, lead author of the High-Level Group on FP10’s report. Conclusions will be delivered by Mikel Landabaso, JRC Director for a Fair and Sustainable Economy.
