2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. As of then, Western-style democracy and markets spread, first to Central and Eastern Europe, and later to the former Soviet Union. Whereas there was widespread support for open societies and capitalist competition in 1991, two decades later there is a growing number of Eastern Europeans disenchanted with the transition to representative government and competitive markets.
Against this backdrop, PEW research centre will release a landmark study on European public opinion, which builds on the research conducted in 1991 and 2009 with a new survey of 17 nations, including both Western and Eastern European countries, as well as Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
In this session, Dr. Richard Wike of Pew Research Center and Sophia Russack will explore findings from this study and will examine the degree to which Europeans are united or divided in their attitudes toward politics, economics and culture.
