It’s a busy week in Benelux with the NATO Summit in the Hague on 24 and 25 June, and the European Council in Brussels in tow on 26 and 27 June. Defence and security, topics which have gained a prominent spot on everyone’s minds over the last few months, are at the forefront of both summits’ agendas.
Both the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Council will focus on building defence capabilities and spending, with the former discussing the famous five-percent GDP target, as suggested by President Trump. Other topics for NATO will include (nuclear) deterrence, countering hybrid threats and cyber defence.
As is now commonplace at EUCO summits, Ukraine will be covered in terms of peace talks, military support but also EU membership. Given the ever-changing and fragile situation in the Middle East, leaders will discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza and escalations in the region.
This CEPS members-only briefing will be made by Nathalie Tocci, Director, Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and James Moran, Associate Senior Research Fellow, CEPS. The event will be moderated by Karel Lannoo, CEO, CEPS.
