A right-wing surge in the European Parliament: are we crying wolf?

0

Right-wing parties are expected to poll first in about one-third of countries in the upcoming EP elections. This result would translate to up to 30 per cent of MEPs positioned to the right of the European People’s Party (EPP). The two parties on that side of the political spectrum, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and Identity and Democracy (ID), would then potentially become the third and fourth largest political groups, respectively.

The views and positions of the ECR and ID are ambiguous. Therefore, the basis for our discussion will be an analysis of their voting behaviour in the last legislature. We will unpack how national delegations within these groups vote; what they support, what they oppose, and how they can impact the EU’s agenda in the next term.

Join us on Tuesday, 30 April to discuss:

  • How much influence would the ECR and ID acquire should they achieve the predicted result, and how would this affect the EU’s policy agenda?
  • How united is the European far-right, and what is their agenda?
  • Would 30% of MEPs coming from the right-wing really be that disruptive – or are we crying wolf?

A livestream will be made available via this page, and directly on the CEPS YouTube channel.
