CEPS, in cooperation with MSLGroup, invites you to a seminar on the business practices and policy developments in the fight against counterfeiting and illicit trade.
Customs authorities are confiscating rising amounts of counterfeit goods year on year. Recent forecasts predict that the value of international trade in counterfeit and pirated goods could reach 991 billion USD by 2022 (Frontier Economics, 2017), double the sum in 2013, according to the OECD and the EU’s Intellectual Property Office (OECD, 2016).
A wide range of studies demonstrate how counterfeits undermines employment and competitiveness in lawful businesses, harms the health and safety of consumers, and deprives public authorities of critical tax income (EUIPO Sectorial Reports). Worst of all, counterfeit trafficking finances organised crime and terrorist groups (Europol, 2017).
Businesses, policy makers and enforcement authorities are developing new responses to tackle the fraud. The use of new information and communication technologies fostered by multilateral and pluri-disciplinary collaboration and more effective public-private partnership can pave the way to more successful practical results to the benefit of honest businesses and society at large.
This seminar, the third on the topic co-hosted by CEPS and MSLGroup, represents a forum for companies and international organisations to learn from each other’s experiences. Practical business cases will be shared. Policy responses will be debated in order to:
- enhance traceability and authentication in the fight against fraud throughout the production and supply chain;
- improve regulatory requirements and standards on traceability and authentication;
- promote cooperation among stakeholders to crack down on supply-chain anti-counterfeiting technologies.
Due to a limited number of spaces, registration will be taken in the order received and no interns will be accepted.
