The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is partnering with the European Parliament to mark this year’s International Day of Commemoration with the exhibition State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda. The exhibition opens on January 25 at the European Parliament museum Parliamentarium and will run until May 15.

The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi propaganda was complex. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, they needed to paint a much more nuanced picture —one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme.

The Nazis used new technologies of their time -- radio and film -- to distribute their horrifying messages. Today, extremists are once again spreading hate using new technologies such as social media and other new digital technologies. Come hear Washington-based exhibit curator Steven Luckert explain how the Nazis pioneered extremist propaganda - and how many of the techniques and messages developed by the Nazi’s are being recycled and reused.
