Hautala and Buti share insights over coffee and croissants
The most salient political and economic themes marking the autumn rentrée were the topics of discussion at a CEPS corporate breakfast on September 7th, with guest speakers Heidi Hautala, MEP, and Marco Buti, DG of DG Ecfin. Chaired by Joaquín Almunia, participants held forth on migration pressures and EU policy towards Africa, both of which continue to fuel political debate among EU member states. The complexity of the Brexit divorce negotiations is also overwhelming, and the consensus to at least freeze the membership negotiations with Turkey is growing. On the economic side, despite encouraging improvements, much remains to be done. Some member states are pushing for a further completion of the monetary union, but several radically differing models are under discussion on the fiscal and economic side. Finally, it is becoming increasingly evident that the new Multi-annual Financial Framework will require a deep re-design, in light of Brexit.
