The Future of Europe, with Martin Selmayr

As a kick-off meeting to a new series of events on the Future of Europe, Martin Selmayr, Head of Cabinet of the President of the European Commission, took part in a lively lunchtime debate at CEPS on September 22nd. In discussion with CEPS Director Daniel Gros, Selmayr took stock of the reflection process initiated by the Commission’s White Paper on the future of Europe and reviewed President Juncker’s 2017 State of the Union speech.

During his opening remarks, Selmayr situated Juncker's speech in the context of those delivered by Emmanuel Macron and Theresa May, identifying their commonalities and dissimilarities. He addressed a broad range of questions, among others on the institutional proposals flagged up by President Juncker, namely the post of EU finance minister and the merger of European Council and Commission presidencies; the need and means to strengthen Economic and Monetary Union; the importance of the EU’s soft power in the field of defence; and the rationale behind Vice-President Timmerman’s subsidiarity and proportionality Task Force.
