Discussing CETA over croissants with Cecilia Malmström

On the morning of October 19th, in the midst of the debate surrounding the conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada and the Walloon Parliament’s vote against it, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström joined CEPS Corporate Members over breakfast. Moderated by CEPS Director for corporate relations, Kerstin Born-Sirkel, the debate focused on the way in which the negotiations have been handled and the future of EU trade agreements. The Commissioner underlined the similarities in systems and shared values of both Canada and the EU. She expressed her support for open and transparent negotiations and the need to include stakeholders as much as possible. Ms Malmström also underlined her wish that all sides would still find a good solution to the CETA dilemma, framing it as follows:  "If we cannot conclude a trade agreement with Canada, with whom can we then do it?”
