Debriefing on the EU-US privacy shield over coffee and croissants
Meeting with CEPS Corporate Members on June 27th, EU Commissioner for Justice Věra Jourová presented the European Commission's current Strategy on the EU-US Privacy Shield. In this regard, she confirmed the Commission’s view that establishing and implementing clear rules for electronic data transfers constitute key elements for ensuring mutual trust and respect in transatlantic relations. Mrs Jourová took the occasion to also provide an update on the state of play of the initiatives presented in the new Commission’s non-paper on e-evidence, in particular relating to the upcoming legislative proposals on production and requests orders to Internet Service Providers (IPS). The Commissioner stressed that the main challenge ahead is to strike the right balance between the need by law enforcement authorities for access to investigative tools that ‘work’ in cyberspace and the guarantee of high data protection standards across the EU.
