A new major regional study entitled Economic and European Perspectives of Western Balkan Countries has recently been published. Authored by Slavica Penev, researcher from the Belgrade Institute of Economic Sciences, the study highlights the importance that committees of finance and economy play in enabling parliaments across the Western Balkans to scrutinise relevant legislation, and thereby set smarter and better regulation that advances sustainable economic development in the region.

The study is part of a wider initiative by the Network of Committees of Economy and Finance of the Western Balkan countries to identify and implement regional solutions to overcoming the economic crisis, and speed up regional and EU integration. The Network, formed in 2009, seeks to strengthen regional parliamentary cooperation on economic regulatory reform. The Westminster Foundation for Democracy is supporting the Network to deliver on its objectives through a three-year project (2012-2015). CEPS is a friend of the Network, and CEPS Senior Fellow Andrea Renda shared his expertise on better regulation during the drafting of the report.
