Diego Valiante, Ph.D. is Head of Financial Markets and Institutions at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and European Capital Markets Institute (ECMI). He is also member of the Group of Economic Advisers (GEA) at the European Securities Markets Authority (ESMA).
As a result of his interdisciplinary background, Diego has published extensively on economics and regulation of financial markets and services, for academic research, specialized policy portals (such as LaVoce and Economonitor) and newspapers. His publications have been so far downloaded +60,000 times. He regularly advises EU institutions and participates to international working groups.
His research activity focuses on regulation of trading in financial instruments (MiFID and EMIR), financial market structure, institutional aspects of the Eurozone crisis, central banking and commodities market structure. He regularly advise European Union institutions/agencies and international organisations. Diego also assisted a central bank in a plan of restructuring of the country's financial framework. He also briefly worked (internship) for a major investment bank in London in mid 2007.
Diego holds a Bachelor in Business Economics and a MSc (2 years) in Economic Analysis of Law from LUISS University in Rome (both ‘summa cum laude’). He also earned a joint LL.M. Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) from Rotterdam and Bologna Universities, and a Ph.D. in Law and Economics from LUISS University in 2010. In 2011, Financial News (Dow Jones) listed Diego among the “Top 40 Rising Stars in Trading and Technology” under the age of 40 in the EMEA.
